A building block for a complete telephone directory in the company is finally available again: Contact objects in M365 are now taken into account at various points in the Microsoft Teams search.

This will be celebrated by companies that have expanded their existing telephony infrastructure with Teams Direct Routing.
Real life use cases
- Phone endpoints that are not compatible (analog or DECT devices) can be integrated into the name search in Microsoft Teams
- External contacts (important suppliers, partners, customers), which already exist as mail contacts in the company directory, can now also be made available by telephone
User experience
Searching for contact objects in Microsoft Teams still doesn’t return any results when I use the general search bar.

However, I find my contact objects in all search bars that belong to the call functions.

The reverse number lookup also works with contact objects: The name of the contact is displayed as the caller.

Administration
When managing the M365 contacts, however, there are special features that I may not expect: Phone numbers in the Office phone field are not displayed in the calling picker and simply ignored by Teams.

A rather undesirable effect is, that contact objects can be found when searching in the chat. Since a contact cannot be assigned a license, it is of course not available for chat or calling.
